Peptide Storage Guidelines
Comprehensive storage protocols to maintain peptide stability, integrity, and research quality. Proper storage is critical for preserving molecular structure and biological activity of compounds like BPC-157 and Tirzepatide.
Critical Storage Notice
Improper storage can significantly reduce peptide stability and compromise research results. Always follow these guidelines precisely and maintain detailed storage logs for all peptides in your facility.
Lyophilized (Powder) Form
Recommended: 2-8°C (Refrigerated)
Stable for up to 24 months when sealed
Extended: -20°C to -80°C (Frozen)
For extended storage periods beyond 24 months
Short-term: Room Temperature
Maximum 2-4 weeks if necessary (not recommended)
Reconstituted (Solution) Form
Short-term: 2-8°C (Refrigerated)
Use within 7-14 days after reconstitution
Long-term: -20°C to -80°C (Frozen)
Aliquot into single-use portions before freezing
Avoid Freeze-Thaw Cycles
Each cycle degrades peptide stability significantly
Receiving & Initial Handling
Upon Receipt:
- Inspect package for damage or temperature excursions during shipping
- Verify seal integrity on all vials immediately
- Document receipt date, batch number, and storage location
- Store unopened vials at 2-8°C within 30 minutes of receipt
- Do not freeze lyophilized peptides unless necessary for very long-term storage
Best Practice: Create a receiving log with date, product name, batch number, storage location, and initials of receiving personnel.
Reconstitution Protocols
Reconstitution Best Practices:
- Use sterile bacteriostatic water (0.9% benzyl alcohol) for multi-concentration vials
- Use sterile water for reconstitution for single-use reconstitution
- Allow vial to reach room temperature before adding solvent (prevents condensation)
- Add solvent slowly down the side of the vial, never directly onto powder
- Gently swirl (do not shake) to dissolve - vigorous shaking can denature peptides
- Let stand for 2-5 minutes if not fully dissolved, then swirl again gently
Recommended Solvents by Type:
Stability & Shelf Life
| Storage Condition | Lyophilized Form | Reconstituted Form |
|---|---|---|
| Room Temperature (20-25°C) | 2-4 weeks (not ideal) | 24-48 hours maximum |
| Refrigerated (2-8°C) | 24 months | 7-14 days |
| Frozen (-20°C) | 36+ months | 1-3 months (aliquoted) |
| Deep Frozen (-80°C) | 60+ months | 6-12 months (aliquoted) |
Environmental Factors
Light Exposure:
- Store in amber or opaque vials when possible
- Minimize exposure to direct sunlight and UV light
- Use light-protected storage areas for photosensitive peptides
- Wrap clear vials in aluminum foil if necessary
Moisture Control:
- Keep lyophilized peptides sealed until ready to use
- Use desiccant packets if storing in humid environments
- Avoid opening vials in high-humidity areas
- Reseal vials immediately after use
pH Considerations:
- Most peptides are stable at pH 4-7
- Some peptides require acidic or basic conditions - check specifications
- Use appropriate buffers for long-term storage of solutions
- Monitor pH periodically for extended storage
Safety & Handling
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Always wear nitrile gloves when handling peptides
- Use lab coat or protective clothing
- Wear safety glasses or face shield
- Work in well-ventilated area or fume hood if required
Aseptic Technique:
- Clean work surface with 70% ethanol before handling
- Use sterile needles and syringes for all transfers
- Flame vial stoppers with alcohol before piercing (if appropriate)
- Never reuse needles or syringes
- Minimize time vials are open to air
Disposal:
- Follow institutional biohazard disposal protocols
- Dispose of sharps in appropriate puncture-proof containers
- Deactivate peptides before disposal if required by regulations
- Maintain disposal logs for regulated substances
Temperature Monitoring
Maintaining proper storage temperatures is critical for peptide stability. Implement these monitoring protocols:
- Use calibrated thermometers or data loggers in all storage units
- Check temperatures daily and log readings
- Set up alarm systems for temperature excursions
- Have backup storage locations in case of equipment failure
- Maintain service records for all refrigeration equipment
- Validate temperature stability in different areas of storage unit
Temperature Excursion Protocol: If storage temperature exceeds acceptable range for more than 2 hours, quarantine affected peptides and assess stability before use. Document all excursions.
